04/30/24 02:02 PM My Doug Ritter Folder Attacked Me! by KenK

Doug Ritter's original RSK Mk1, purchased very soon after it first came available, was the very first knife that I carried clipped to my front pocket - with the knife body inside my pocket. I'm still carrying that original knife, although my first mini was lost some years back.

Yesterday I reached into my pocket to pull out my car keys. Something felt odd. I quickly realized that my finger was rubbing alongside the tip up open blade. Luckily the blade edge just barely caught my pinkey finger. The blade is VERY sharp, and took a very shallow slice across the knuckle. Lots of blood at the time, but as of this morning it looks good and no pain. I consider myself very lucky.

All I can think of is that the ring the keys are on caught the thumb stud and pulled the blade out. I don't think the Resqme window popper that rides with the key could have caught the thumb stud. I honestly have no concern that it will happen again.

04/28/24 07:07 PM Bird Flu (H5N1) found in cattle -- are Humans next by jds

The "Bird Flu" (a.k.a Avian Flu) also known as H5N1 which killed millions of wild and domestic birds (ie. chickens) across the United States in recent years has mutated enough that it infects various species of mammals as-well. Within the past few weeks, herds of cattle have become infected with H5N1 flu. Thus far, a few farm hands have been infected with H5N1 but there is no evidence yet of Human-to-Human transmission. As more domestic cattle (and people who work around them) become exposed -- the possibility exists that the virus might evolve into a form readily transmissible among humans. Here are a few articles from which this summary of events was compiled for your review...

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/22/health/birdflu-marine-mammals.html

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-ne...-say-rcna149520

... I would think we should be monitoring reputable news sources about ongoing developments concerning the H5N1 flu. I've always regarded this forum as my go-to place for thoughtful discussions about such topics.

What are your thoughts regarding recent developments related to H5N1 flu?

04/07/24 01:02 PM Bad review of a great backpack.. by quick_joey_small

I never thought I'd see a poor review by Luke at Outdoor Gear Review.
This is it:

Though unlike me, who was left totally confused by the constant references to; "for the price", you have me to do the background checking and all the reviews agree, it's a terrific pack at any price.
Not; 'only if you don't have a litte more to spend'.

Apart from that it's his normal thorough good sense.

I ordered the 50 litre version on Friday and it arrived this morning (Sunday).
BY FAR the most comfortable pack I've ever used!
Don't understand his minor criticisms. The inside of the straps felt smooth to me and a belt on a pack can't be too stiff.
Like all the reviewers, I worry over the pack length zip, but they've failed on no one and the pack comes with a 10 year warranty. And the zip really makes packing a dream.
Packs have come a long way since I last bought one. This is his idea of not light? If that little means so much to you, eat a few less calories.

Best of all; leaving the most remarkable feature to last:
This costs £59.99.

Are other packmakers taking us for a ride?

04/05/24 05:48 PM New York Earthquake by adam2

Bit surprised that no reports on here about this. Widely reported on UK media.
Stated to be 4.8 magnitude. Early reports suggest no loss of life and only minor injuries.
This of course may change as more reports come in.
